Dental Hygiene

Dr VC Bhagwan Dental Cleaning Pietermaritzburg

What is Dental Cleaning?

Even if you brush and floss your teeth faithfully, it is important that you have your teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis.

Over time, your teeth tend to build up a layer of plaque (a sticky, bacteria-rich film) and hard deposits (called tartar, or calculus) that are very difficult to remove. If left untreated, consequences include bleeding gums, bad breath, receding gums and gum disease. While your teeth are being cleaned, it’s also a good opportunity to take a close look at your oral health in general and check for a few specific problems. Dental cleaning is often performed by a dental hygienist. You will also be advised on how to achieve a consistent standard of oral care at home.

We look forward to meeting you and your family at Parklane Dental Pietermarizburg.

Why is Dental Hygiene so Important?

A short video explaining the importance of dental hygiene and what is done during a regular dental visit.

Root Plaining

What is Root Planing?

Root planing is the process by which residual embedded calculus and portions of cementum are removed from the roots to produce a smooth, hard, clean surface.

This procedure is done under local anaesthetic over two appointments. The procedure is very similar to a cleaning except you will be anaesthetized in order to clean a bit deeper. After the treatment you will be numb for a few hours.

A three-monthly scale and polish should be done to re-evaluate and monitor the condition of the gums and the bone level.

When is Scaling and Root Planing is necessary?

The scaling and root planing procedure is for patients who have spaces between their gums and teeth that are too deep for a regular dental cleaning to reach. Plaque gets trapped in these spaces and cannot be removed with regular brushing; if left untreated, it could lead to bone and tooth loss.

This condition requires some dental patients to undergo a scaling and root planing procedure to remove any built-up plaque below the gumline. This deep-cleaning procedure also helps remove any bacteria in the mouth, which is important to one’s overall oral and general health.

What our clients have to say

My children and I have visited Dr Bhagwans surgery on numerous occasions for various treatments. The care taken in attending to us has been impeccable each time. Dr Bhagwan is gentle, soft spoken and makes you feel comfortable and assured.
The dental technologist that usually does the cleaning is also very patient and good.
Sarika the receptionist has always been friendly and most helpful. I have been to other dentists prior and certainly did not receive the warm and friendly care as I did here. I would certainly recommend Dr Bhagwan for any dental treatment required.
